‘The Mudbirds’: een grensverleggend blues duo. Muziekliefhebbers zullen worden verrast. Nieuwe originele geluiden, moderne harmonieën, onverwachte ritmes en een zeldzame combinatie van mondharmonica en diverse slide-gitaar instrumenten. Niet makkelijk om te plaatsen, ergens tussen blues, bluegrass en wie weet waar!
De blues is zowel voor Alan Laws als voor René Tweehuysen altijd de basis geweest voor hun muzikantschap. The Mudbirds bestaan sinds 2007 en spelen aanvankelijk eigenzinnige bewerkingen van blues-traditionals, maar al gauw onstaan er ook eigen nummers. Zo veel mogelijk proberen ze in hun eigen composities de gebaande paden te vermijden. Binnen het blues-idioom nieuwe dingen doen, daar gaat het hun om, er is nog veel te ontdekken. Blues blijft de basis maar hier en daar hoor je duidelijk de invloed van verschillende muziekstromingen zoals bv. wereld muziek, minimal music, Ierse muziek, Oosterse muziek en bluegrass. Misschien zou je dat ‘World Blues’ kunnen noemen.
Als winnaars van the Dutch Blues Challenge in 2011 (solo/duos) vertegenwoordigden The Mudbirds Nederland tijdens de prestigieuze International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2012. Hun eerste cd ‘Slick Blues’ is met veel lof onthaald. Als solo/duo act waren The Mudbirds in 2017 finalisten in finale van de Dutch Blues Challenge.
Na het succes van hun eerste CD hebben The Mudbirds na enig broeden in 2015 een tweede ei gelegd. Er kwam weer iets moois uit, ‘Stumble Trip’, een nieuwe CD met 14 zeer originele eigen composities. Opgenomen in een live studio setting zonder overdubs.
Alan Laws (UK) is eind jaren 70 begonnen als 'busker' (straat muzikant) in de Londense metro. Hij is een harmonica-virtuoos en combineert techniek met krachtige, maar ook subtiele tonen.
René Tweehuysen (NL) is een lap-slide gitaar en bottleneck-slide gitaar specialist met een unieke stijl. Binnen ‘The Mudbirds’ geeft hij op een persoonlijke en uiterst dynamische wijze kleur aan de muziek.

Biography
"The Mudbirds": a blues duo opening up new horizons. Most listeners will be suprised. New original sounds, modern harmonies, unexpected rhythms and a rarely heard combination of harmonica and various slide-guitar instruments. Hard to define. Somewhere between blues, bluegrass and who know’s what!
The blues has always provided the inspirational roots for Alan Laws and René Tweehuysen. The Mudbirds have been around since 2007. First playing interpretations of blues-traditionals, they quickly moved to writing their own compositions. They mostly avoid the usual predictable clichés. They know that there are many new directions to be explored using the blues as a starting point. Using different musical influences from ‘world music’, western folk, eastern tones and bluegrass. Perhaps better described as ‘World Blues’.
As winners of the Dutch Blues Challenge in 2011 (solo/duos) The Mudbirds represented the Netherlands at the prestigious International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2012. Their first CD ‘Slick Blues’ received much acclaim. In 2017 The Mudbirds were chosen as only one of two solo/duo acts to take part in the final of the Dutch Blues Challenge.
After the succes of their first CD they have layed a new egg and in 2015 something beautiful hatched again! ‘Stumble Trip’ with 14 original compostions.
Alan Laws (UK) started as a busker on the London underground in the seventies. He has gained a reputation as a virtuoso harmonica player. A combination of unusual power interdispersed with subtle tones.
René Tweehuysen (NL) is a lap-slide guitar and bottleneck-slide guitar specialist with a unique style. By fully using the haunting/ 'lonesome sound' of these instruments he adds his own personal and dynamic colour to the music.
